We report on using extrusion for the first time to fabricate hollow-core band-gap PMMA optical fiber performs. The perform cladding was made of 7 layers hexagon array air holes (252 holes), and the central 19 cells were removed to yield clubs air hole structure. The extrusion conditions for fabrication of the perfor ! " were optimized and the performs was drawn to band-gap optical fiber by sleeve method. The shape and relative size of the air holes in the preform were well preserved during fiber drawing which could be seen from SEM images. The extrusion technique of HC-PBG fiber preform offerd key advantages over both conventional capillaries stack-draw and drill-machining methods: with the extrusion technique, optical thermoplastic polymer-based HC-PBG fiber preform could be produced on a large scale.
