Over the last 30 years, hypervalent iodine compounds have increasingly drawn attention due to their oxidative properties. Quite a range of such compounds are nowadays routinely used in many laboratories, but stoichiometric amounts and often even an excess of the hypervalent iodine reagents have been necessary. Several recent publications have now shown that it is possible to use only a catalytic amount of an iodine containing molecule together with a stoichiometric oxidant.
