PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polymers of an aromatic compound and a heterocyclic aromatic compound with reduced metal ion content. PSOLUTION: The method for producing the polymers of aromatic compound and the heterocyclic aromatic compound comprises an oxidation polymerization step wherein the aromatic compound and the heterocyclic aromatic compound are polymerized by using the hypervalent iodine reagent. The hypervalent iodine reagent can be recovered and reused when the reagent has an adamantane structure and/or tetraphenylmethane structure. A catalytic amount of the hypervalent iodine reagent can be used in the oxidation polymerization step when another oxidizing reagent containing no metal is used and the polymerization is carried out in the existence of such co-oxidizing agent.
