Multi-functional polymers have generated interest for their potential therapeutically applications. Amphiphilic block copolymers aggregate in an appropriate solvent, e.g. water, to form micelles. The two most interesting properties of such micellar structures are the possibility to include organic molecules in an aqueous medium (drug delivery application) and, if the polymers are functionalized, the option to perform chemical reactions within their core (micellar catalysis application). Beside these linear amphiphilic block copolymers, polymeric unimolecular micelles became more important in recent times. These unimolecular architectures feature covalently linked amphiphilic segments (i. e. hydrophobic core bond to a hydrophilic shell) leading to a higher micellar stability in solution. For the tailored creation of amphiphilic block copolymers, 2-oxazolines are versatile monomers. 2-Oxazolines can be (co)polymerised in a living manner via a cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) to form well-defined polymers with narrow molar mass distributions.
