The role of transesophageal echocardiography in acute aortic syndromes

Introduction: Acute aortic syndromes (AAS) is a lethal medical condition including classic acute aortic dissection (AAoD), intramural hematoma (1MH) and penetrating atherosclerotic aortic ulcer (PAU). Given the non-specific symptoms and signs, a high clinical index of suspicion followed by an imaging study (CT,TEE,MRI), is the most appropriate diagnostic approach. (1-3) In this regard the role of echocardiography is briefly discussed.
