Geological hazards at the Azores region

The clear association between different kinds of natural hazards brought up the need to approach the risk evaluation through an integrated perspective. This recent concept of multi-hazard analysis gains particular expression in regions like the Azores where earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides are frequently associated at different scales in time and space. In this paper the main geological hazards which occur at the Azores are described. A brief reference is made to the geological conditions which determine the occurrence of earthquakes, volcanic phenomena and landslides in the region, underlining the impact that such events may have.
