Stabilization of a BNSF embankment failure via displacement and surcharging

Between July of 2004 and November of 2006, Braun Intertec Corporation worked to stabilize an embankment failure along a BNSF railroad in Long Lake, Minnesota. The failure occurred as an existing embankment was being widened to accommodate a southerly track shift and a TH 12 bypass through the area. The failure impacted an approximate 500-foot section of embankment fill being advanced over a thick sequence of organic soils, and soft silts and clays. Given the depth of the failure mass, and because it was largely submerged, the chosen mitigation alternative consisted of displacement, followed by temporary surcharging to reduce the risk of long-term embankment deformation. The final embankment geometry was also altered to enhance long-term embankment stability. Inclinometer measurements taken during displacement and surcharging, and after surcharge removal, were critical to validating the success of the project. Nineteen months after surcharge removal, only negligible amounts of deformation have been recorded.
