The upcoming shift of some BNSF traffic away from a fuel surcharge could cause other railroads and truckers to contemplate a similar movement. Highroad Consulting chief executive Sandra Dearden told a National Industrial Transportation League webinar this week that other Class I carriers are probably considering changing their fuel surcharge programs in the wake of BNSF’s decision. If the railroads were to abandon fuel surcharges, it would make it harder for their trucking competitors to continue them, she said.
