Gas phase reactions of substituted benzene anions with N and O atoms are studied by experiment and computation Associative Electron Detachment (AED) is the major channel for all reactions except the reaction of phenoxide anion with O atom Reactions with N-atom: (1) Less rapid with substituted benzene anions than with azine anions. (2) No measurable reaction of phenoxide anion with N atom. Reactions with O-atom: (1) More rapid than with N-atom; (2) Many ionic product pathways; (3) Several products, such as CO and CO_2 have been detected in the ISM; (4) Low AED for the reaction of phenoxide anion with O atom. Spin conversion is essential in some processes.
