The lipid composition of the eye lens, unlike other organs, is known to vary between animal species. Sphingolipid concentrations in lens tissue are also known to be dependent on the life span of species. Changes in sphingolipids concentration may also occur due to disease or can lead to various diseases (Exp. Eye Res., 2004, 79, 761-768). In this study, MALDI-MSI is employed to determine sphingolipids distribution in rat eye tissue and to our knowledge represents the first reported application of MALDI-MSI for spatial mapping of sphingolipids in the rat eye tissue.
