Protonated analytes with sulfone functionality showed dominant TMMS adduct-MeOH product ion, which upon CAD produces diagnostic fragment ions of m/z 75, 105 and 123. Protonated analytes with carboxylic acid functionality showed TMMS adduct-MeOH and/or TMMS adduct-2MeOH and/or a stable adduct as product ions. CAD of TMMS adduct-MeOH produces TMMS adduct-2MeOH. Upon CAD, these product ions showed characteristic loss of molecules with MW of 44 and 90 Da. Ion-molecule reactions with TMMS followed by CAD were demonstrated to allow the identification of protonated sulfone and carboxylic acid functionalities in a linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer.
