In recent years, direct SPME-MS couplings were explored, including DART-SPME-MS, DESISPME-MS and coated blade spray ionization (CBS)-MS. All of these could suffer of poor reproducibility, due to the open condition in which desorption/ionization of analytes happens. A plasma-based active capillary ambient ionization source, based on dielectric barrier discharge ionization (DBDI), was employed for the ionization of chemicals desorbed from solid-phase microextraction (SPME) sorbents. This direct coupling allowed for a simple, rapid and effective detection and quantitation of diverse compounds, with all the advantages of the SPME extraction but without the disadvantages of conventional, time consuming analysis methods (e.g. SPME-GC). Pesticides, amines and illicit drugs were successfully desorbed, ionized and quantified.
