There are a few peptides found to be highly resistant to degradation in the triple-helical region of type-I and type-III collagen molecules (see Figure 4 above). Nearly all the Asn and Gln residues in the peptides of collagen preserved in 4,400-year-old wall painting of Egyptian tomb were deamidated, suggesting that the period of degradation is much longer than the rate of deamidation in which Asn and Gln could be distinguished by their rates, Asn > Gln.
