Validated Quantification of Priority Organic Pollutants in Wastewater Using Direct Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry!

A robust and automated method was developed in synthetic wastewater to extract, resolve, and quantify 22 compounds identified by the World Health Organization, Stockholm Convention, EPA, and many others as dangerous environmental contaminants. Current EPA methods require outdated analytical methodologies such as liquid-liquid extraction and calibration curve quantification. A novel workflow was also developed, taking advantage of the ability of D-ID to compensate for analytical variance, to transfer this method to an off-site laboratory with approximately two hours of training. This research has produced a highly accurate, reproducible, and transferable quantitative method that uses stir bar sorptive extraction and direct quantification by isotope dilution. This the limited sample preparation and high fidelity in this method is attractive for laboratories seeking to maximize throughput while simultaneously achieving accurate quantification to improve validity and fidelity of results.
