Current study examined unbranched long chain fatty acid alpha oxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes using stable isotope labeling and GC/MS and demonstrated that 1) Exogenous fatty acids undergo peroxisomal FA alpha and beta oxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes; 2) Approximately 25percent of exogenous D4C16:0 undergoes alpha oxidation in peroxisomes; 3) FA alpha oxidation is stimulated by leptin and activation of PPAR(alpha).
