A dual cell linear trap configuration enables improved performance over a single cell configuration. A higher pressure region can be utilized for improved efficiency for trapping injected ions, CID, and ion isolation. Trapping efficiencies of > 95percent, CID efficiencies of >80percent, ion isolation resolutions of >7600 with an efficiency of 68percent are achieved. A low pressure region can be utilized to improve mass analysis resolution and/or scan speed. Peak widths of .45 amu can be obtained while scanning at >33,000 amu/sec. Transfer of ions from one cell to another takes < 5 ms and is >90percent efficient for all ions in a 2000 m/z mass range. Further optimization of transfer conditions and other possible advantages of both the high and low pressure regions will continue to be studied in the future.
