1) ZnO nanoparticles with anisotropic shapes are an efficient ionization-assistance material for low molecular weight samples without liquid matrices and buffers such as citric acids. 2) The background noise was simple and low because no matrix was used. ZnO-SALDI produced a simple mass spectrum for phospholipids. 3) PSD by ZnO-SALDI enhanced fragmentation of oligosacharides, producing far more fragments than MALDI. 4) ZnO-SALDI was useful for synthetic polymers PEG, PS and PMMA. In contrast, TiO_(2)-SALDI showed no precursor ions of the polymers because the strong TiO_(2) photocatalyst mainly induced fragmentation. 5) The characteristic affinity of Zn with amines may be useful for amine discrimination in lipids and polymers with amine groups.
