High-throughput discovery of signaling peptides in the Aplysia Central Nervous System

Over 200 unique peptides processed from 39 prohormones have been characterized from the Aplysia californica CNS. This data supplements our in-house library of signal peptides characterized from direct tissue and single-cell MALDI and identifies a number of unique peptides that are now being examined for motifs that may indicate that the peptides are bioactive. Several novel peptides have been characterized, and these new peptides have led to the identification of four novel prohormones. Homologs of these four newly-discovered prohormones have been found in different species. The discovery of these prohormones and processed products enables the future molecular and physiological studies linking novel SPs with biological functions.
