The efforts to increase the coverage of metabolomics in model species are hampered by the extremely high dynamic range of compounds in biological samples and by the limited dynamic range of mass spectrometric based metabolomics. In addition, metabolite production is highly regulated by factors including developmental stage, stress, and genetic variations. Therefore, to increase metabolome coverage in model species, such as soybean (Glycine max, cv Williams 82), single biological samples will not be sufficient to cover all components of the metabolome. The goal of these studies are: (1) to develop a method that increases the coverage of mass spectrometry-based metabolomic analyses of biological samples and (2) to develop different extraction methods for metabolomic analyses of soybean seeds.
