MALDI profiling of tissue protein expression has been developed to probe for biomarker detection as well as for classification of tissues, e.g. in lung cancer. Sample preparation, instrument reproducibility, and data analysis are all critically important for acquisition of interpretable results. In this study, MALDI-MS was used to evaluate a twenty-two hour window of embryonic chick heart development bracketing the initial formation of valvuloseptal precursor cells. Protein expression profiles of heart extracts were correlated with embryonic stage according to the standardized criteria of Hamburger and Hamilton. Data analysis procedures coupled with classification algorithms allowed grouping of test samples into developmental stages that differ by as little as 2 hours.
