Proteomic Analysis of a Novel Anaerobic Bacterium Syntrophus aciditrophicus

Syntrophus aciditrophicus is a new, strictly anaerobic, gram-negative, non-motile, non-sporeforming and rod-shaped bacterium that degrades benzoate and certain fatty acids in syntrophic association with hydrogen/formate-using microorganisms such as methanogens or sulfate reducers. S. aciditrophicus can grow in pure culture on crotonate, producing acetate, butyrate, caproate, and hydrogen. However, the characteristics of S. aciditrophicus are distinct from other syntrophic bacteria phenotypically and genetically. To define metabolic pathways and lay a foundation for bioremediation efforts, a proteomic analysis was conducted in S. aciditrophicus cultured with crotonate and the natural substrate, benzoate, in the absence of methanogen-collaborators. To date, 318 unique proteins, which are essential for crotonate and fatty acid metabolism, have been identified.
