Ion/ion reactions have been demonstrated to be useful in the analysis of biomolecular ions in the gas phase. Most ion/ion chemistry has been studied in an electrodynamic ion trap due to its capability of 1trapping ions of opposite polarity simultaneously and the convenience of subsequent mass analysis using the same device. However, limitations of ion trap as mass analyzers, such as relatively low resolving power and mass measurement accuracy, warrant the development of new instrumentation to overcome the mass analysis limitations. Therefore, we are interested in applying ion/ion reactions on a quadrupole/linear ion trap/ time-of-flight instrument; so that the ion/ion reactions can be carried out in the linear ion trap and the products can be analyzed by the time-of-flight analyzer.
