The purpose of this study was to examine a range of mixed-cation (organic and inorganic species) montmorillonites with respect to their catalytic activity in carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions. Such reactions, especially with respect to exchangeable Fe~(3+), are believed to be important in the abiotic processes associated with the formation of Humic materials.[1-2] We are particularly interested in these materials as "green" catalysts, with potential industrial applications in fine chemical synthesis. Clays were modified using a selection of hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA), benzyltriethylammonium (BTEA), and ferric iron cations. Both mono- and mixed-cation saturated SWy-2 montmorillonite were prepared for each, with the order of loading varied to determine its effect on catalytic activity. The catalytic activity of these materials was determined via phenolic oxidative coupling, specifically quantified by the conversion of 2-naphthol to l,l-binaphthalene-2,2'-diol relative to the iron content of each system.
