Mica is unique among natural materials because it has a basal surface containing a relatively high density of permanent negative charge which can be exposed over a large molecularly-smooth area by cleaving Consequently, mica matters to many in the environmental, geological, physics, chemistry, and materials science communities and is the focus of wide-ranging scientific and applied research as well as technological functions. Many of the research questions revolve around fundamental processes at the mica-water interface including the behavior of water at charged surfaces, the nature of forces between charged surfaces, and the sorption mechanisms of ions and molecules.
