This paper presents experimental results regarding the bolt bearing strength of titanium-graphite fiber metal laminate joints as a function of joint geometry, in particular the edge-distance ratio. The measured bearing offset and ultimate strength values are used to examine the influence of the laminate constituent materials and optimize the joint geometry. Specific manufacturing considerations for polymer matrix composite materials with interleaved titanium foil are also discussed, including surface functionalization of the titanium, modifications to the polyimide cure cycle, and machining of the fastener hole. The effects of these manufacturing parameters on the resultant laminate microstructure are investigated via scanning electron and optical microscopy.
