The onset and propagation of Schallamach waves at a model, elastomeric interface has been described in detail using a custom-designed friction instrument. The detailed observation of this unique elastic instability provides fundamental insight into the balance of interfacial and bulk contributions to the property of friction for soft interfaces. Future research will focus on the influence of molecular structure and the implementation of hierarchal geometries at the interface for the direct control of this critical property.
