WILDFIRE FUEL MAPPING USING HYPERSPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING DATA

Fire fuel map is one of the most critical factors for planning and managing the fire hazard and risk. However, fuel mapping is extremely difficult because fuel properties vary at spatial scales, change depending on the seasonal situations and are affected by the surrounding environment. Remote sensing has potential of reduction the uncertainty in mapping fuels and offers the best approach for improving our abilities. The objectives of this paper were to present an overview of methodologies for mapping fuel properties using hyperspectral remote sensing data. For our study, we used Hyperion imagery acquired in April, 2002. In order to achieve our efforts, we analyzed four fuel characteristics which are fuel type, fuel biomass, fuel moisture, and fuel condition. Fuel moisture and fuel biomass was assessed through expression of the liquid water bands. Fuel type and fuel condition were mapped using spectral mixture analysis.
