Comparison of Simulation Models for Elevator Systems

Precise simulation models for the vertical motion of elevator systems are needed in many cases. For example, to calculate the energy consumption, to test new algorithms for position, speed and current controllers or to analyze vertical vibrations impairing the passenger's comfort. The mathematical model of elastic ropes with distributed mass yield in a partial differential equation (PDE) which are however unhandy to deal with in simulations. Therefore in a first model the rope system is assumed by a massless spring, while the rope masses are concentrated in the counterweight and cabin. In a second model the rope is divided into many finite elements, each consisting of a spring with attached lumped masses. It is compared how well the models fit to the solution of the PDE and how many finite elements are reasonable. Furthermore, the rope system is extended to a complete elevator model. This model is validated via the frequency response analysis at an elevator and shows good accordance up to frequencies of 100 Hz.
