摘要

On a global scale, nitrogen incorporated into biomass, mainly as peptides, is rapidly recycled to inorganic N through biodegradative processes in water, soils, and sediments. This recycling sustains the nitrogen cycle and maintains global productivity. Leakage of N from the cycle occurs to a small extent, mainly by immobilization into a pool of organic N that recycles on time scales that are much longer than microbial processes. By this process N becomes sequestered into refractory organic matter pools and unavailable for the sustenance of life processes.
