The effect of chiral solvents on the crystallization of mandelic acid was investigated. By applying chiral mandelic acid esters (mandelates) as tailor-made solvents, enantiospecific interactions between the solvents and mandelic acid enantiomers were created, which yielded in differences for solubility and metastable zone widths. Via molecular modeling studies the underlying interactions were estimated and correlated with the experimental investigations. The diastereomeric adduct of (R)-mandelic acid and (S)-mandelate was found to be more stable then the other adduct from (S)-mandelic acid and (S)-mandelate.
