Government mandates and high crude prices continue to drive the increased use of biodiesel. OEMs have observed that usage of B5 to B100 biodiesel fuel blends can lead to contamination of the automotive engine oil. The problem seems to be more pronounced in modern, low emissions diesel engines equipped with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF). Detection of biodiesel and related decomposition products requires different techniques than those used for mineral diesel in used engine oil. The authors have developed several practical analytical methods for detecting and quantifying biodiesel content in diesel engine crankcase oil. The study includes a diverse set of conditions: low-high sooted, and low-high oxidized used oil using several base oil groups and biodiesel fuel feedstocks from field tests, lab engine tests and laboratory prepared oils. The impact of various levels of fuel dilution on piston deposits was also established.
