Extraction of Vanilla Planifolia Andrews by Pressurized Solvent

Pressurized Solvent Extraction (PSE) is one of the most promising and recent extraction techniques employing organic liquid solvents at elevated temperature and pressure and offering advantages in terms of reduced solvent consumption and shorter extraction time. Vanilla Planifolia Andrews, belonging to the family Orchidaceae, is the most valued species known for its flavour qualities and hence widely cultivated and used for the production of flavouring components. The present work investigates the extraction of flavour components from Vanilla by PSE. PSE using aqueous ethanol as extractant resulted in an oleoresin yield of 15.3% (w/w), 22.8% (w/w) and 25.7% (w/w) at 4, 7 and 10 M Pa respectively in 3 h duration at 358 K in all the cases. The conventional Soxhlet extraction for 12 h gave an extract yield of 16.7% (w/w). The extracts were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Vanillin was found to be the major compound present in the extract along with p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and vanillyl alcohol.
