In this paper a dialectic conceptualization of culture based on the Chinese Yin-Yang principle is applied to critique Hofstede’s research methodology and to offer an alternative processual approach to international cross cultural management (ICCM) research in the Chinese context. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions framework is static in nature, therefore his survey-based methodology only captures a static “snapshot” of the dynamic process of cultural emergence. Alternatively, ICCM research in the Chinese context should adopt a processual approach by taking a “first-person” native view and focusing on human interaction, so that the rich dynamics and intricacies of cultural emergence can be fully captured and elucidated.
