Aims: To explore the necessity and possibilities for developing sugarcane as a renewable energy crop in China. Methods and results: In view of the on the present petroleum crisis in the world, the necessity and possibility for developing sugarcane asa sustainable reproduced energy crop in China were analyzed. As a C_4 plant, sugarcane is rather high in light conversion efficiency, photosynthetic rate and biomass productivity, which makes it the most. Sugarcane can be cultivated extensively, especially in upland area because of its strong drought resistance, and its productivity potentials still high in China. The cost for ethanol production from sugarcane is economically viable Brazil has been very successful in utilizing sugarcane as an energy crop for ethanol enougy ethanol production efficient energy converter. Sugarcane is a most promising bio-energy crop in China. However, China needs to pay attention to the breeding of new energy cane varieties, developing technology for the processing of energy ethanol production for cane and corresponding automobiles based on ethanol petrol blends. Significance of Study: The ethanol production with sugarcane is profitable because of its low processing cost and high additive value of the byproducts.
