A new theoretical model is presented because of the limitation in traditional theoretical model of the high voltage direct current method for leakage detection of landfills, which treats the single liner landfill as infinite three-layer even medium in horizontal direction, regarding the current flowing through a leak as a superposition result of the negative current source located at the feed-in side and the positive current source located at the feed-out side. The potential distribution pattern in every layer medium in this model is forward modeled. According to the basic characteristic of this model, the results are simplified. The results indicate that the potential distribution of the electric field in half infinite space in the three-layer medium model agrees with that in the infinite medium space of half space model.
