Hydrogen storage in salt caverns is state-of-the-art; It may be an option for a better utilisation of fluctuating and non-dispatchable renewable resources; Storage capacity is two orders of magnitude higher than that of pumped hydro or (AA-)CAES at comparable costs but at lower overall efficiency. The technologies do not compete but complement each other; Synergies with a developing hydrogen fuel market may emerge; R&D is still required for electrolysers, hydrogen gas turbines, system integration and operation schemes.
