Providing field technicians and individuals working in field offices with laptops and PDA's has become the norm in the oil and gas industry. Efficiency and productivity throughout an operation is greatly increased when taking advantage of computer technology. However, the technology front is changing rapidly and this is especially true in the world of portable and personal computing. Selecting hardware and software is critical in guaranteeing continued productivity with computer systems. If systems are kept for three years or longer systems should be capable of performing well beyond the duties of the day. If computers merely meet or barely exceed user needs today they will become burdens in the future and productivity and efficiency will drop. Future use of computer equipment must be accounted for when purchasing hardware.
