A coal mill was observed to go into resonance at various coal feeder speeds. As a result of the resonant condition, shaft failures occurred. The dynamic displacements of the three grinding rollers were measured for subsequent analysis using instrumentation techniques developed by Engineering Consultants Group Inc. (ECG). A finite element model of the mill and grinding rollers (3 each) was developed. These major components of the FEA model were tied together through the coal bed stiffness. Basic measurements results and a modal analysis of the mill were reported at the 2004 meeting of MFPT. In the study, transient forces, which were based on measurement, were applied to the three grinding rollers to determine the dynamic response. The addition of dampers to the roller compression springs was evaluated for the effect on the shaft stresses.
