It is an honour and a great pleasure to talk about a subject which deals mainly with the ability of humans to move forward. I hope that the rapid progress made in recent decades in the field of transport will serve as a good example for all humans to also move forward mentally, sentimentally and spiritually! ? have tried throughout my career to promote 'anthro-politics', politics where people matter and to advocate, inter alia, the important principles of social, economic and environmental awareness. The theme of this conference very much coincides with some of the issues that concern me most. Hopefully, as defined in the Manifesto that has been presented today, your discussions will underline the urgent need for an inter-disciplinary approach to suburban expansion and commercial development. Inner cities in some parts of the world have experienced deterioration by way of draining water and electricity investments, thus becoming less viable and attractive places in which to live. An approach that considers the implications of development decisions - that maintain access to employment, goods and services and also serve multiple environmental goals - would be more successful if collaborative decision-making processes were in place.
