Barretts esophagus (BE) is an acquired disorder of distal esophagus characterized by replacing the eroded squamose epithelium with meta-plastic columnar. This entity is defined by the presence of special type of intestinal metaplasia (SIM) which is the precursor of adenocarcinoma in most cases. Our goal was to point out the effect of surgical and medical treatment modalities of long segment Barrett's esophagus (LSBE). In 98 patients mat we have treated for symptomatic GER between 1999 and 2004, we have presented better results in disease control and progression prevention with Nissen antireflux procedure. Both therapeutic modalities are successful in symptom control, but surgical treatment shows better long term results and is more effective in the control of BE endomorpholgical mucosal condition.
