This presentation focuses on the work of Nina Maritz Architects as a small architectural practice in Namibia operating in a developing country in the context of limited economic means, a rigorous climate & complex multicultural relationships. The background to the practice is given in terms of a personal history of the principal, Nina Maritz, the socioeconomic context and natural geography of Namibia. The type of architectural commissions, influences on the architect and the influence of sustainability as a philosophical objective is discussed. Some projects are described, focusing on passive solar and conceptual design responses. The paper looks at the constraints and opportunities for sustainable architecture in Namibia, as well as an evolving 'manifesto' developed by the practice over the last 6 years. In conclusion, the dissemination of the philosophy of sustainability is discussed.
