A study on the reinforcement effect of Umbrella Arch Method and prediction of tunnel crown and surface settlement
Umbrella Arch Method (UAM) is commonly used for tunnel design in order to reinforce the ground around tunnel and stabilize the tunnel face. However, since the design and construction work with UAM have been done on the basis of only the practical experience of engineers, it needs to analyze quantitatively the reinforcement effect of UAM. In this study, Finite Element Method was applied for analysis of the quantitative reinforcement effect with deformation modulus of ground and overburden. As a result, the settlement increases as overburden increases and decreases with the increase of the deformation modulus of ground. Also, the prediction equations for crown settlement and surface settlement, which are represented as exponential function, have been suggested through the regression analysis.
