The results of this study indicate that early mechanical and his-tological restoration of a large central vertebral body defect can be achieved using high-strength, injectable CaSO_4 cement. Although PMMA can be effective in restoring height and stability to the vertebral body, it does not resorb, and the long-term effects of a bolus of PMMA are unknown. CaP and CaSO_4 cements offer a more biological approach than PMMA with the ability to be re-sorbed and replaced with new bone over time (1, 2). In this study, injectable CaSO_4 cement demonstrated substantial resorption and replacement with new bone and marrow after only 13 weeks. The early resorption and bony restoration of vertebral defects using this new high-strength calcium sulfate cement may be advantageous over previously evaluated methods.
