The invention provides a particulate composition adapted for forming a bonegraft substitutecement upon mixing with an aqueous solution, comprising i) a calcium sulfatehemihydratepowder, wherein the calcium sulfate hemihydrate is present at a concentrationof at least about50 weight percent based on the total weight of the particulate composition;ii) a monocalciumphosphate monohydrate powder; iii) a non-porous .beta.-tricalcium phosphatepowder; and iv) aporous .beta.-tricalcium phosphate powder. Bone graft substitute cements madetherefrom, a bonegraft substitute kit comprising the particulate composition, methods of makingand using theparticulate composition, and articles made from the bone graft substitutecement are alsoprovided.
