A seawater exchange breakwater may be useful to exchange the seawater between inside and outside harbor for improvement and preservation of seawater and seabed quality. In this study, we propose a modified curtain-wall type breakwater with a seawater exchange function as well as a breakwater function. Performance of the new breakwater is examined by physical model tests and numerical simulations. Both the damping wave model and the volume of fluid method are employed in numerical simulations. The new breakwater has a submerged horizontal plate in the water chamber, which plays an important role to reduce both the reflected and transmitted waves for the wide range of wave frequency. It is also found out that the modified breakwater induces outgoing currents by the vortex flow generated from the lower edge of a front curtain wall driven by wave motions.
