Novel heat insulation materials were synthesized by molten salt method by using natural forsterite and NaCl-Na_2CO_3 molten salt. Impurity Fe_2O_3 with different mass ratios (0-9 wt.%) was added into raw materials, and the samples were prepared at 1000 °C for 10 h. Effects of Fe_2O_3 on properties including bulk density, apparent porosity, strength and thermal conductivity of heat insulation materials were investigated. Mechanism of molten salt during synthesis processing was discussed. The results show that the contents of Fe_2O_3 have significant effects on properties of samples. The strength increases and thermal conductivity decreases of samples with the increasing of mass ratio of Fe_2O_3, and moreover, larger content of Fe_2O_3 may decrease the strength.
