We investigate the hypothesis that adenosine cardioprotective effect may be mediated by changes in calcium homeostasis, affecting calcium release from the SR. We found that R-PIA, an AY agonist, increased PLB gene expression without effecting SERCA2a and RyR2. IB-MECA, an A3 agonist, did not produce any change and CPX, an A1 antagonist, reverted R-PIA effects. We conclude that modulation of SR function may be involved in the anti-ischemic effect of adenosine.
