Hyperoxia Increases Central Aortic Pressure in Hypertensive Patients

Increased activity of carotid body chemoreceptors was observed in hypertensive patients. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of hyperoxia on central arterial pressure recorded with radial artery applanation tonometry. In 11 hypertensive pts pulse wave analysis was performed before and after 15 min of 100% oxygen breathing. Radial pressure waveforms were transformed to aortic waveforms and parameters of central pressure were calculated. Hyperoxia significantly increased central aortic pressure (124.6+-23.5 mmHg vs. 132.1 +- 25.6 mmHg, p=0.04), augmentation pressure (8.9+-7.0 mmHg vs. 13.7 8.5 mmHg, p=0.009), augmentation index (21.1+- 12.2% vs. 28.8 +- 10.6%, p=0.002), time to the reflected wave (220 +- 26.1 ms vs. 238 +- 26.1ms, p<0.001). Hyperoxia changes cardiac afterload by the direct influence on peripheral resistance.
