ENHANCING THE EUROPEAN METROLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGH COLLABORATION AND COORDINATED RESEARCH

As the new millennium dawned the European National Metrology Institutes were faced with what we now refer to as the "European metrology dilemma". Demands for wider scope and greater precision from traditional stakeholders, the need to support emerging areas such as biotechnology and nanotechnology, and the greater demand from established areas such as food safety, clinical medicine, environment, with static public funding, required a paradigm shift in the way we operated. Recognising these challenges and the broader responsibility to effectively underpin other areas of science, to facilitate innovation and to support the expectations for improvements in the quality of our lives, the "Metrology in the European Research Area" series of projects were launched and executed. This paper will present an overview of how we moved from concept of joint action to the launch the first phase of the European Metrology Research Programme in 2007, and will also look at future prospects for the EMRP.
