An Alternative Solution to Post-Process Mist Elimination

In certain industrial applications standard gas treatment methods using waveform chevrons and conventional knitted meshes for mist elimination have not been successful in meeting pollution control requirements. As a result the facilities in question have been required to run at lower capacities or have been forced to use extraordinary emissions abatement treatment methods to meet local and Federal emissions requirements. This paper will use three case histories to discuss the specific operational and emission issues that caused failures, and to draw general conclusions about the efficacy of emissions treatments during the process versus post-process. In each case the emissions problems required correction after construction and commissioning, thereby increasing the overall capital and startup costs. Gas flowrate, velocity and pressure drop will be considered in determining if treatment during the process can be the most effective alternative in meeting emissions standards. This paper will also discuss ways to determine which process designs may be prone to failure in meeting emissions requirements and how changes to those designs can minimize the risk of failure and the need for post-process treatment.
